With this handcrafted terracotta flowerpot you bring an Italian classic into your home. In Italian, the term "Terracotta" means "terracotta" and is made with clay. An advantage of terracotta is its porosity. This natural material absorbs excess water and lets it evaporate. Terracotta is a porous natural material which has the advantage of letting the roots of plants and the earth breathe, but also of circulating water and air. This porous pottery provides good drainage and good evaporation of water. Thus, no problems of stagnant water or rot. This thermoregulatory material is a real insulator that protects plants against cold and heat. This does not prevent placing a winter veil on the foliage of fragile plants! Another advantage is that the clay is UV resistant.
Be careful, if the terracotta is glazed or enamelled, it loses its porosity and becomes airtight. The cultivation conditions will therefore have to be adapted. In garden centres, terracotta pots remain more expensive than plastic pots.
Terracotta can freeze depending on the quality of the pot and can break under the effect of frost or impact. If you adopt terracotta pots, you will have to water more regularly because of the porosity.
Maintenance :
Wash the new jar and wet it completely before using it. Turn your pottery regularly: this allows each face to be exposed alternately to the North and the South, knowing that the mosses develop more on the faces exposed to the North. Take care not to obstruct the drainage holes, by raising your gate to guarantee the flow of water and to avoid any risk of frost and cracks. Use a high-pressure water gun to remove moss without risk of damaging the pottery.
